Colts GM Bill Tobin Blasts Mel Kiper in 1994

April 25th, 2013| by

ESPN’s Mel Kiper has never been afraid to criticize NFL teams for their draft day decisions. In 1994, then-Colts GM Bill Tobin decided to fight black.

In response to Kiper blasting Indianapolis for passing up on Fresno State QB Trent Dilfer and instead using the No. 5 overall pick on Nebraska LB Trev Alberts, Tobin memorably exclaimed on national TV, “Who the hell is Mel Kiper?!” and “Mel Kiper has no more credentials to do what he’s doing than my neighbor, and my neighbor’s a postman.” After the draft, Tobin continued his rant against Kiper at a Colts press conference.

Alas, Kiper’s criticism of the Colts drafting Alberts was warranted, as Alberts spent just three injury-plagued seasons in Indianapolis before retiring prior to the 1997 season — the same year that Tobin was fired as the Colts GM.

That being said, Kiper wasn’t completely correct. Dilfer — the player he thought the Colts should have drafted — had a relatively nondescript career outside of a 1997 Pro Bowl nod and being carried to a Super Bowl XXXV victory by the Ravens’ dominant defense in 2001.

To this day, Kiper vs. Tobin remains one of the draft’s most memorable moments.
