Ex-W. Virginia HC Bill Stewart, 59, Dies

May 21st, 2012| by

There’s terribly sad news coming out of Morgantown today as the West Virginia athletic department has announced that former Mountaineers football coach Bill Stewart died of an apparent heart attack on Monday. He was 59.

Stewart was reportedly playing golf for the West Virginia Hospitality and Tourism Association’s annual golf outing when he collapsed and was rushed to Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston, WV.

Stewart took over for the departed Rich Rodriguez for the 2007 Fiesta Bowl and was named the program’s permanent head football coach after an upset win over Oklahoma. Stewart went 28-12 during his time as West Virginia’s head coach but resigned last June after a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter claimed Stewart asked him to dig up dirt on new offensive coordinator and head-coach in-waiting Dana Holgorsen.
