‘Fake Jeff Withey’ Reveals His Identity

April 4th, 2013| by

At the same time that Kansas’ Jeff Withey started emerging as a star center, the hilariously crude @FakeJeffWithey Twitter account skyrocketed in popularity. It now has over 32,000 followers — 7,000 more than the actual Withey has.

With the end of the real Withey’s KU career coming last weekend, the fake one has revealed his identity: Ty Gardner, who graduated last spring with a degree in political science.

“I created @FakeJeffWithey with the idea that it would be a fun way to make jokes and brag about the school I love at the same time,” Gardner wrote in a guest story for the University Daily Kansan. “Maybe if I was lucky, I thought, it might catch on and there would be a few hundred people that enjoyed it. Needless to say, things exceeded my original expectations pretty quickly.”

Gardner added that he will no longer tweet from the account as a nod to the actual Withey moving on from Kansas. However, he will keep the account open for those that want to relive his unique sense of humor.

Best of luck in the future, Ty. We hope you experience real success as a result of this brilliantly fake work of art.
