Florida Lost Nearly $1M on Sugar Bowl

June 13th, 2013| by

It wasn’t just on the field — where it was upset, 33–23, by Louisville — that Florida lost at the 2013 Sugar Bowl in January.

At Wednesday’s annual budget meeting for the University Athletic Association, school officials revealed that Florida lost $840,000 on the game, mostly due to failing to sell its required allotment of 17,500 tickets.

The Gators were not the only SEC bowl team to take a loss on ticket sales this past year. At the conference’s annual spring meetings in May, commissioner Mike Slive said the league would be pushing for a lower required ticket allotment for future bowl games.

Considering that BCS bowl games are among the few postseason contests where participating schools consistently make money, this is disconcerting news to say the least. The Playoff Era can’t come soon enough.
