Gamecocks Practicing With Padded Caps

An unsuspecting visitor to a South Carolina football practice might wonder if the Gamecocks are trying to dress as the Michelin Man.
Very recently, the team decided that all its players will practice in Guardian Caps — padded shells made of polyurethane fabric that fit over helmets and are designed to reduce impacts to the head. The Gamecocks’ linemen wore them in the spring; now everyone will wear them during practice.
Guardian Caps creator Lee Hanson told USA Today that his product’s foam rubber compartments dissipate the energy from a hit to the head better than a solid shell, thus more easily preventing head injuries.
With so much controversy swirling around football over concussions, will Guardian Caps be the future of the sport? We shall see.
