Harris INT Clinches Alabama’s 1979 Title
July 22nd, 2013| by Lost Lettermen
Alabama’s 24–9 victory over Arkansas in the 1980 Sugar Bowl — an unprecedented third straight Sugar Bowl victory for the Crimson Tide — lacked the dramatics of its pulse-pounding victory over Penn State the year before.
But the win was no less satisfying for Bear Bryant’s troops. After all, it gave ‘Bama its second straight national title and third one overall in the 1970s.
The Tide’s victory over the Razorbacks was clinched by sophomore defensive back Jim Bob Harris late in the fourth quarter. With Arkansas driving, Harris — who had earned the first of three straight All-SEC selections the previous month — intercepted QB Kevin Scanlon at the goal-line, snuffing out the Hogs’ last hope.
Harris currently lives in Nashville, where he works for 3M. With the college football season just over a month away, the Crimson Tide are gunning for their third straight national title. Jim Bob Harris profile
