Illinois Football Gets New Orange Helmet

July 16th, 2013| by

After an abominable 2-10 season under first-year head coach Tim Beckman, Illinois is getting a new primary football helmet that’s just as uninspiring as their play on the field.

As you can see from the picture below, the Illini are going with an orange helmet with a giant “I” on the sides which replaces the “Illinois” logo that’s been used since 1989. The old helmets weren’t great, but the new ones look more generic than those worn by a Pop Warner football team. Even worse, the helmets are much uglier than the matte blue version that Illinois used last year (they will still be used as a secondary helmet).

Illinois should have either gone with the matte blue helmet full time, stuck with the old helmet or been forward thinking like this awesome headress helmet designed by Charles Sollars. Instead, it’s just the latest “improvement” the football program has botched. Grade: C
