Louisville Team Plagued by Strep Throat

March 31st, 2013| by

It’s not just the inside presence of Mason Plumlee or the outside shooting of Seth Curry that Louisville will be contending with in its Elite Eight showdown with Duke on Sunday.

The majority of the Cardinals’ team — including head coach Rick Pitino — has recently been battling strep throat. Among those afflicted is the starting backcourt of Russ Smith and Peyton Siva.

“I’m much better,” Smith told reporters on Saturday while also mentioning that he was at “70 percent” during his 31-point performance in Louisville’s 77–69 victory over Oregon in the Sweet Sixteen on Friday. “I’m still clogged up, but it’s nothing I’m not used to, but it’s nothing that will keep me from playing. I wish I was better.”

Pitino allowed his team to sleep in on Saturday in order to speed up their recovery, and by all accounts everyone is slowly but surely getting better. “Look, it’s not like we’re deathly sick,” junior captain Luke Hancock said. “We’re going to play and we’re going to be fine.”

We can already hear the conspiracy theorists claiming the reviled Mike Kryzewski was somehow behind all this.
