OSU Fan on 70-Year Home Game Streak

The late Dick Coffee of Alabama has some company when it comes to diehard college football fandom in the form of John Crawford.

A longtime resident of the Clintonville neighborhood in Columbus, OH, Crawford has been present at every single Ohio State home game since 1943 — 434 straight games in all following last Saturday’s season opener against Buffalo.

“It just got to be a habit, I guess,” the 82-year-old Crawford told the Columbus Dispatch in the understatement to end all understatements.

Crawford’s streak began when he was 12 and his father took him to his first game. He later sold Cokes in the Ohio Stadium stands and enrolled at OSU, where he became a cheerleader.

“Every time I’m in there, I’m thinking 105,000 people seem to have forgotten what’s outside those walls and they’re in there just to watch the game,” Crawford said. “And when [Howard] Cassady or [Archie] Griffin or Eddie George breaks loose, the spontaneous screaming and yelling — this is a great feeling.”
