Presbyterian Bounce Pass Shocks WFU in ‘10

August 12th, 2013| by

Often times when you’re an FCS school serving as an opening-week cupcake for an FBS opponent on the road, you have to pull out all the stops to keep things respectable. Exhibit A: Presbyterian (SC) College against Wake Forest in 2010.

With the Blue Hose trailing the Demon Deacons in the second quarter, 28–0, en route to a 53–13 loss, QB Brandon Miley threw a “bounce pass” off the BB&T Field turf to WR Derrick Overholt. Presbyterian acted as if it was a dead ball, and so did the Wake Forest defense.

But because it was a backward pass, the ball wasn’t dead — it was, in fact, a lateral. After briefly playing possum, Overholt threw downfield to a wide open Michael Ruff, who galloped into the end zone for a 68-yard score that put Presbyterian on the board.

“The trick play was as well executed as anything I’ve ever seen,” Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe said smiling after the game. “He (Overholt) hit the ball and seemed so disgusted that it was incomplete. I thought that was beautiful.”

Expect the Demon Deacons to be fully versed on what constitutes a dead ball — as opposed to a lateral that merely hit the ground — when Presbyterian revisits Winston-Salem on August 29th in both teams’ season openers.
