QB Phillip Sims Transferring to Virginia

QB Phillip Sims is transferring from Alabama to Virginia due to family reasons, according to a report from ESPN’s Joe Schad.
“The reason for me leaving is nothing more than a personal matter,” Sims said in a statement in part, according to the report. “I just need to be closer to home to support my family at this time and that needs to be my priority right now.
“I would still like to continue my football career, and hopefully I can do that and also be there for my family.”
Sims was a candidate for the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback job prior to last season but lost out to A.J. McCarron, who helped lead ‘Bama to the national championship. Sims redshirted in 2010 and played limited time in eight games last season, throwing two interceptions without a TD for the Tide.
A Chesapeake, VA, native, Sims chose Alabama over Georgia, Tennessee, FSU and Clemson. While Sims claims he is transferring to be closer to home, our suspicion is that Sims is using this as an excuse to receive a hardship waiver and play for UVA this fall after being stuck behind A.J. McCarron in Tuscaloosa.
Sims could be an explosive weapon for Virginia is the No. 2 quarterback in the Class of 2010 according to Rivals.com.
