Recruit: God Told Me to Go to Ohio State

Many were shocked when Ridgeland (GA) High School safety Vonn Bell — Rivals’ fourth-best recruit at the position in the Class of 2013 and No. 32 overall prospect — spurned SEC favorites Alabama and Tennessee in favor of Ohio State. It was a decision, Bell says, on which he literally received spiritual guidance.
“The first two days (before signing day), I just woke up out of my dreams,” Bell told the AJC’s Michael Carvell. “Me and God just had a conversation. He said ‘I want you go to Ohio State.’ Then I just knew ever since then.
“He just woke me up in the middle of my sleep, and I just heard ‘Ohio State’ in my head. I just listened to it, and stuck with it. Ohio State was in my heart.”
College football fans will be sure to note this comes three years after an internet rumor in 2010 that Urban Meyer lured then-defensive tackle recruit Sharrif Floyd to Florida when Meyer received a sign from God in the form of a dream that Floyd should play for UF – although the story was later debunked by Floyd.
Either way, we can’t help but be curious about both Nick Saban’s and Butch Jones’ reactions when Bell told them he was spurning their respective schools because God told him to.
