VT Helmets Honor Newtown, Blacksburg

December 27th, 2012| by

The latest helmet trotted out by Virginia Tech this season might be its best one yet.

The matte, maroon helmets that the Hokies revealed last Wednesday as their Russell Athletic Bowl practice helmets honor the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on Dec. 14 and the campus shootings in Blacksburg in 2007.

A decal of a ribbon that’s half orange (one of VT’s colors) and half green (one of Sandy Hook Elementary’s colors) is affixed to the side of the helmet. The number 58 — the total number of deaths in the two shootings — is displayed under the rallying cry “Prevail.” A smaller version of the ribbon will be on Tech’s helmet for the game.

Perhaps more than any other community, Virginia Tech and Blacksburg understand the pain that the people of Newtown, CT, are enduring. The Hokies’ message of “We are here for you” is a powerful one. Grade: A
